Service Learning Project: Paraffin Dip
For my service activity I taught a person the reasons why an OTA would do a paraffin wax dip, and then proceeded to teach them about all of the precautions and indications for having a paraffin wax dip. They were then dipped, and after, I finished it off with a nice hand massage. This all together took about ½ hour. We did this in the Occupational Therapy Clinic on the Jordan Campus at Salt Lake Community College.
I learned so much from this experience. There are many reasons for getting a paraffin wax dip, and I always thought that it just warmed up your hands. We used to use them a lot before we would do any sort of interpreting for the Deaf, but I didn’t realize all of the other advantages, how it can relieve pain, stiffness, help with sprains and strains, along with improving your range of motion. It was also fun to teach this to someone else and have that experience.
