Service Learning Project: Assistive Technology Device
The Wheelchair Access Flag
Our Assistive Technology Device that we had to invent, Denise Egbert and I came up with a flag that you put on the passenger side mirror, that alerts the nearby parkers, to stay clear 8 feet. It has velcro straps attached to a wooden dowel, and a suction cup on the end that sucks to the window. It is lightweight and weather proof and is very user friendly. We were happy with our finished product!
After we finished our device, we made a poster with the details of how it was made, and spent a couple of hours with our fellow students, in the atrium of the Jordan campus. We told students and passers by, about our device, while we also decorated boxes for the Utah Food Bank.
Service Learning: Career Fair
On March 7, 2012, I attended the Career Fair at Salt Lake Community College on the Redwood Campus. The Fair went from 5pm-8pm, and I went with 2 other students from our Occupational Therapy Assistant Program. We brought a poster about occupational therapy, and some assistive devices from the clinic, to have at our table as we talked to people about the program. Most of the people who came were high school students with their parents, looking at options for careers. I didn’t really know what to expect, but we had a good time explaining what occupational therapy was, and what was involved after getting into the program. I think only one person actually knew what it was! We shared a table with the Physical Therapy Assistant students, so most people would come up to talk to them, and see our devices on the table and ask about them. Since they have changed the requirements to get into the program, we couldn’t answer some of the questions that they had for us, so we sent them down to the table where Evelyn O’Dell was sitting, so they could ask her the details of the process.
I actually have never been to a career fair before, but it looked like it was very well planned. There were many tables and programs represented, they had free pizza and drinks for the students, and I think it was very helpful. It was fun to explain occupational therapy, and fun to reflect on all that we have learned so far. I had a good time.
