Loom Hat- Service Learning
Our first project for the semester was to make a loom hat for a baby. We finished this on August 22. It was really fun as we all sat around together chatting and laughing. It didn't take more than an hour or so to complete, and by the end we had 23 hats to donate. It was a really rewarding project knowing that it was going to go to a worthy cause. Each hat was a little different, as we all had to put at least one stripe of a different color on it. They turned out fantastic!
Making a loom hat in therapy could help patients who are dealing with a variety of disorders .Perhaps an older adult has had a stroke and has resulting cognitive and motor impairment She can thus address the fine motor skills of manipulating a needle while stabilizing with the affected side to promote weightbearing, in addition to the cognitive skills of sequencing and task planning. Also, while making a loom hat, the person could be working on building the positive and supportive social relationships that are so necessary for recovery, while also improving the cognitive skill of attention to task in an activity that can be graded up or down based on the level of structure and amount of choice provided.

The Road Home
Three of the girls in our class donated all of the hats to the Road Home in Salt Lake City. The Road Home is a private non-profit social service agency that assists individuals and families experiencing homelessness in Salt Lake County and along the Wasatch Front. Their mission is to help people step out of homelessness and back into our community.
The Road Home was originally established in 1923 to assist stranded travelers, the but has grown to address a spectrum of needs that people experiencing homelessness encounter, as they work to restore their lives. In addition to operating the largest shelter in Utah, the Road Home has developed a comprehensive housing program that helps people move into housing as quickly as possible.

Embroidered Christmas Ornament- Service Learning
On August 29 we finished our second craft item that we had to make. It was an embroidered Christmas ornament. They were adorable and stuffed with potpourri so they smelled good too! Each one was different as we got to pick out of 4 or 5 designs to make. They required about 5 different stitches and took a couple of hours to finish. They all turned out so cute, and they were donated to Copper Ridge Rehab at 3706 W 9000 S, in West Jordan. Lisa, Blyth, and Sarah took them down and gave them to Sylvia P., who works at Copper Ridge. Embroidery has been proven to benefit those individuals in long term care, and living with chronic pain, as well as many other clients. I am loving this class! We have so much fun working together, and learning new crafts that we will be able to teach in treatment sessions at the clinic, or when we are out in the job field.
Baby Quilt- Service Learning
On September 5th we started a baby quilt. We partnered with another person, and together picked out fabric and tied a quilt for a baby that we will again donate. It took us 2 weeks to finish the project, but they all turned out so cute and different. Quilting can be a very helpful modality for individuals working with Fine Motor skills, Range of Motion and for Self Esteem. It is a way of learning life skills and those who participate in a group, may end up with a special support system as well.
We donated the blankets to the:

Wooden Toy Car-Service Learning
On September 19th, we made a wooden toy car. After tracing the car from a template with an Awl, we cut out the body of our car with a coping saw from a block of wood. We then spent the next 1/2 hour sanding out the rough spots. Next we drilled out holes for the axels, and attached the wheels. After we were all finished, we brushed it with mineral oil to seal it. Thery all turned out so cute, and each a little different.
Woodworking is one modality that can be used when working with clients who have had a stroke. You can strap a sander to the affected hand, and have them work on their range of motion, standing balance and self esteem. It can help with discrimination of certain muscles, as well as attending to task.

YWCA
Jason Torgerson and Ben Kubricke donated all of the cars to the YWCA at 322 East Broadway in Salt Lake City.
Mosaic Coaster
On September 26, we had the opportunity to work with mosaic tiles, and make a coaster. While creation of a mosaic tile may appear to be a simple leisure activity, this task places demands on the patient. The patient needs to understand and remember the instructions, attend to task and maintain body position. Selection of and picking up the tiles requires oculomotor control, visual discrimination and specific movements of muscles and joints. These include, but are not limited to: scapular protraction and retraction while reaching for materials and finger flexion, extension and thumb flexion and opposition when manipulating the craft tiles. Applying this craft in a group setting would provide the opportunity to address social and communication skills as well.
Crochet Dish Rag
On October 3rd we made crochet dish rags. This suited some of the class better than others! This would be a good option for those individuals with seizures, autism, adolescents, couples and families to reduce anxiety, anger, depression and self-destructive behaviors just to name a few.
Crocheting is something that you can do at your own leisure, and has a very calming effect of individuals. If it is done in a group, it has the added benefit of working on social skills as well.

Crochet Christmas Bell Ornament- Service Learning
On October 3, we finished out dish rags and started on a crocheted Christmas Bell Ornament. They all ended up being different sizes, depending on how tight or loose we crocheted. We attached a little jingle bell inside and donated all of them. This would be very satisfying for those individuals to make as gifts, or to decorate their own little Christmas Tree, but with all of the added benefits that crocheting has.
The Bells were donated to Legacy Rehab, 3706 w 9000 s, West Jordan, Utah.
Knitted Bell Christmas Ornament- Service Learning
Our next activity we learned, was how to knit. This was easier for some people, but has many of the same therapeutic values that the crocheting has. Those who suffer with seizure or autism. It would be good for adolescents, couples and families to reduce anxiety, anger, depression and self-destructive behaviors. It was a lot of fun. The ornaments were donated to The Childrens Justice Center in West Jordan, Utah.
Leather Key Chain- Service Learning
The key chain that we made was really fun. We learned that it would be a good activity for someone who is creative and is working on paying attention to detail. Its also a way to let off some physical aggression, as you need to use a mallott for pounding the leather and putting the rivet in. It also could be a good activity for strengthening and socialization.
The keychains were donated to the Habitat for Humanity in Salt Lake City.

Greeting Cards
We made greeting cards to donate and had so much fun being creative ourselves. They all turned out so cute and different. Some were for weddings, get well cards, birthday or all occasion. These were the two that I made. This would be a great project to increase creativity, to work on initiation, termination, social participation, or fine motor.
The cards were donated to:

Painted Christmas Tree Ornament- Service Learning
In November we painted a clay Ornament for Christmas. We go to chose from about 5 different designs and had fun painting them. This would be a good project for a patient with a SCI working on refinement. It would also be a good treatment activity for patients working on creativity, or those with dementia and especially for pediatrics.
Ceramic tiles delivered at "Our House" assisted living facility located at 10386 s. 220 w. South Jordan.
Crafts on a Shoestring
On October 9th, I presented to the class some activities that could be done for under $1.00 each, as therapy. The first was a bag that is made from an old t-shirt. It requires some cutting with scissors, tracing with a pencil and sewing across the bottom. It would be very easy. It could also be used to hand from a walker or wheelchair to hold items.
The next is a soap pouch that hold a bar of soap in the shower or bath. It was simple to make and required cutting and light stitching. This would be very handy in the shower to make the gripping of soap not so slippery, and can also be thrown in the washing machine.
The last is a snowman Christmas decoration made from socks and filled with rice. It is so easy to make and so cute!

Thinking Outside the Box
One of our assignments was to come up with a common household item that could be used for a treatment session for 5 different diagnoses. One had to be for pediatrics, adult rehab, geriatrics, psych and a craft. I chose a latex glove, and these are some of the pictures.
